What is ABUS?

What is Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS)?

Breast ultrasound (ABUS) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses sound waves to create detailed images of breast tissue. It does not use radiation and is commonly used as a supplemental screening tool—especially for women with dense breasts.

ABUS captures high-resolution, three-dimensional images using automated ultrasound technology designed to improve visibility in dense breast tissue.

How ABUS Works

Precise imaging. No compression. No radiation

During your exam, a trained professional places the ultrasound device on each breast while you lie comfortably. The system automatically captures multiple cross-sectional images and compiles them into a detailed 3D view for review.

You do not lie under compression like in a mammogram. Most women find the experience comfortable and pain-free.

ABUS vs. Mammogram

Not one or the other - often both

ABUS and mammography serve different but complementary roles

Two different tools. Two complementary roles

Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) Mammography
Uses sound waves Uses low-dose X-ray
No radiation Uses radiation
Supplemental screening Primary screening tool
Helps detect findings in dense tissue Dense tissue can limit visibility
No compression Requires compression
Important Clarification:
*Breast ultrasound (ABUS) does not replace mammography. It is intended to complement it, particularly for women with dense breast tissue.
Why breast density matters

Why Breast Density Requires Advanced Imaging

Dense breast tissue is common and normal. On a mammogram, both dense tissue and potential abnormalities appear white, which can make small findings harder to detect.

ABUS provides additional clarity by capturing the breast in three dimensions, helping detect findings that may not be visible on mammography alone.

Who ABUS Is Designed For?

Breast ultrasound may be appropriate for women who:

  • Have been told they have dense breast tissue
  • Want supplemental screening alongside mammography
  • Prefer a non-radiation imaging option
  • Seek proactive, preventative imaging
  • Want clarity and peace of mind

01 Arrival

Arrive at our clinic and check in with our team. Your visit begins in a calm, supportive environment designed to put you at ease.

02 The Screening

A trained technologist performs your automated breast ultrasound exam. The screening typically takes 20–30 minutes and requires no compression or radiation.

03 After Your Exam

Your images are reviewed by board-certified radiologists, and you’ll receive clear guidance on next steps if additional follow-up is recommended.

All imaging studies are reviewed by board-certified radiologists.

Safety & Evidence

Safe and evidence-based

ABUS does not use radiation and is considered safe for most women. Clinical studies show that adding ABUS to mammography can increase detection in women with dense breast tissue.

Important note: All screening tools may identify findings requiring follow-up. Not all findings indicate cancer.
